Iowa Public Radio - Showing the Way
Todd Mundt is now blogging about where Iowa Public radio will be going.
I think that Iowa has a message for all in Public Media.
- Our listeners do not want us to compete with each other. In this case inside of Iowa - but surely also nationally - if they knew about how suspicious many stations and producers were of each other - they would be amazed.
- THE issue for stations is NOT BYPASS. It is do we offer a valuable service to our community?
- "Valuable" means local news and programs that have the same quality as national offerings.
- Valuable means getting behind issues that are vital for your community and offering a good way for citizens to get engaged.
This is I feel a fractal seed for all of Public radio. Where Iowa goes today is where America has to go.
Take a look at what all the consultants and focus groups have wrought. Much less programming variety-6 hours a day of the BBC. All programs broadcast at the same time on all stations. Very little musical variety. When I tune in the local University Radio Station, I know the announcer has made it to work through the same unpredictble midwestern weather conditions that I will soon face-not safely enscounced in a studio 150 or more miles away. Less information, less variety, less local, more like Clear Channel of Iowa. This is progress? Not many positve comments on Todd's Blog. Just another power grab by Michael Gartner and the Des Moines elites.
