History repeats itself.
Martin Luther's big idea was that you did not need the Pope and the Church to intercede between you and your salvation. Pope Leo insisted that only the Church could do the deal with God to offer you salvation.
The New Reformation really has arrived today in our context.
We all believe that we can only be healthy if the medical system intercedes and cures us when we are ill. In this world view, we have little control over our own health and it is "Normal" as we age to get ill.
We know it is normal to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, dementia and arthritis. This is what debilitates us for decades before we die after years of treatment by the medical system. It is normal - it is how most of us live out the last 10 - 20 years of our lives.
But now some of us are learning that this is not true. We don't need the healthcare system to be healthy. We can be healthy all by ourselves .
If we fit how we eat to how we are designed.
For we were designed by evolution to live active and healthy middle and late age.
It is nice to have the Church of Medicine around. If you are in a car accident. If you have an infectious disease. If you are having a complex birth. Medicine is good. But it is not best suited for making us well.
This chart shows the science. The red line is based on PEI data for men. What it shows is that the average man today, gets so ill from these diseases, and btw Diabetes makes all of this worse, that about 10 years before he dies, he is in effect helpless. Modern medicine can keep him alive but that is it.
This is why our health care costs are ballooning.
The black line shows our evolutionary design. We are designed to stabilize in our 40's and remain active from then on. Wow! That is a claim. So why?
Nature wastes nothing. If you were a salmon - once you have laid and fertilized your eggs there is no use for you. So you die.
But if you are human? It takes about 25 years to raise a human to be a fully contributing part of the tribe as all parents today still know. No other species takes this long. Young parents are fully committed to this process as all of you with kids under 12 know too. It does indeed take a village to raise a child. Guess who carries most of the load in a tribe? Yup the 40 + and the grandparents.
Why do women have menopause? Other apes keep having babies until they die. They do for this reason. There has to be a core of older folks who do most of the work! If they were not there, no one would make it.
This is the context for the black line. We are designed to live active lives as we age. If we did not, we would not be here because no tribe could have raised their young.
So why are we not living like this?
He is. The reason why he is and we are not is this. He, and anyone else, who does not eat a modern diet lives as we were designed to.
What doesn't he eat. He eats no grains. No dairy. No beans. He hardly ever eats any sugar except when he can raid a bee hive.
He never gets any modern diseases.
They don't either - so long as Masai live their tribal life and eat their tribal diet, they too avoid modern diseases. BUT if they should move tio the city and take up our diet, then they do.
Now our tribal chief on Kitava and these Masai die of all sorts of things that modern medicine can help with. An infected wound. Snake bite. An infectious disease. But they don't get what we do. They don't get the "normal" diseases of the west.
If you would like to know more about the truth of this - here are 2 books
- Food and Western Disease - By Staffan Lindeberg - His website is here and there is enough here to get you started.
- Why we get fat - Gary Taubes - Here is the link to his book - here is a link to a Youtube series
These two men and Michael Rose, the evolutionary biologist who studies aging - are the Luthers and Galileos of our time.
Their work is stripping away the dogma that has held us back from taking control.
- We are designed to age well
- The core deciding issue for whether we age well or not is diet - we are not designed to eat the "modern diet" and the industrial diet is the worst thing we can eat
Since the 1980's we have been told that fat is the risk and that carbs are good. The obesity epidemic and the diabetes epidemic started then.
Medicine has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.
You can take control of your health.
Luther's idea that we did not need an intercession to save us changed the world. I think that when you experience the old way of eating, you will experience a revelatory experience for yourself.
You don't have to read all the science. If you try this for even a month, you will be different.
