Back in the day, I worked on a project in Ukraine. On Sundays I and a colleague who are are not Christians, would often go to church. We went because of this type of music. And the setting - with the congratation standing close to each other and the choir invisible behind a screen.
It was as if angels were singing.
This piece by Tchaikovsky, no believer either, is one of my favourites. The Hymn of the Cherubym is when the service starts and the priests process.
There is a moment when the sopranos come in early that is spine tingling and of course at the end the deep Russian basses complet the piece as only they can.
