To follow up my post on Bomber Command and the Dam Busters - here is a post (in Rob's War Stories) on the 306th Bomb Group - the longest serving US Bomber command in England in WWII. It was the unit of one of our stories from WOSU and was the model for the great film - 12 O'Clock High.
The 306th leaned the hard way that unless escorted by fighters - not until 1944 and the deployment of the Mustang - flying on daylight raids was really a suicide mission.
Here Peck tells his new command that it is best that they consider themselves dead.
