I think that there is a helpful link between the meaning of Easter and the changing times that we all face.
The Easter Myth of choosing death in the hope of resurrection is not of course a Christian exclusive but is a Myth found in many cultures - Osiris being the best known. It is of course a mythic metaphor to explain renewal.
The old has to die for the new to have room. The world "dies" in the fall and is "entombed" in winter. This weekend is of course close to the equinox. Life returns. It always does. All these myths
So it is for ideas and products. We call this the life cycle. This applies to Memes as well.
Our industrial world that includes how we understand media and the economy. Is not a universal truth. It is no more "true" than say the medieval world. It is only a construct. It is only a Meme. A Meme that has had its day.
So here is my point.
The golden age of radio, of TV of the newspapers, of war, of farming, of anything based on the industrial model will never and can never come back.
So here is our choice. We can invest most of our energy in hanging on. In wishing that this was not so. In complaining. In merely making cuts. All of this diminishes us and in the end will mean that the inevitable end will come but with no chance of renewal.
Or we can choose the bigger life. We can do what people of my age normally do, we can devote the rest of our lives to creating something great for our children and our grandchildren.
We only have a limited amount of energy. If we devote ourselves to Renewal, Nature, Myth and the Gospel reminds us that we will be successful.
So on this day of despair, when only a few "weak" women, stood by the cross and the strong men cowered in a room. When all seemed lost - even to Him. We might remember how the myth ends and take heart and pull our own courage back.
To find redemption, we have to stop fighting death.
