This is my History of the world in one page!
I have done my best to reveal the key transitions of human history. Times when the overarching mindset changes. When the rules of success usually reverse.
We are so confused now I think because we are right in the middle of one of these changes. This time we are circling back to our Hunter gatherer roots where we re-connect with nature as our teacher. We are making a shift from a machine metaphor of cause and effect to a natural metaphor of emergence.
We are confused now because all we know is the machine metaphor. So we apply machine thinking about top down, cause and effect, inputs to our problems. In every case, we are not only failing but making the situation worse.
We are confused, for our institutions, where we have lodged all our social power, are all children of the past mindset. So at the moment we are helpless. They have the power and they make it all worse and we don't know what to do.
But we can look to the chart and see what will happen.
In every case, the power institutions are replaced as it sinks in that they cannot cope.
Chiefs are replaced by Kings. Kings by leaders elected in mass democracy. Councils of the Tribe, by Councils of the King, By White House Staff...
The many gods of the natural world, by One God, by the God of Consumerism...
We cannot know the detail of the new world right now, but we can know already its design principles. They are
There is no compromise between these two models. They are polar opposites. As all the other transitions have been.
This is where we are coming from and where we are going. Our confusion is that we are in the middle.
All our power institutions live in the old. They are trying to fix our problems with a perspective that cannot do the job. They themselves cannot be fixed. In the end Monarchies were put aside. So were Tribal Chiefs.
We waste our time trying to fix them.
Our only hope is to find what works and build upon that.
That is why I work for Public Media and for Libraries. I think that they have the trust to help us come together and work as a community to solve our problems where we live.
