Feds Secret Fear: Oil Spill Could Hugely Expand

A confidential government report on the unfolding spill disaster in the Gulf makes clear the Coast Guard now fears the well could become an unchecked gusher shooting millions of gallons of oil per day into the Gulf.

"The following is not public," reads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Emergency Ops document dated April 28. "Two additional release points were found today. If the riser pipe deteriorates further, the flow could become unchecked resulting in a release volume an order of magnitude higher than previously thought."

In scientific circles, an order of magnitude means something is 10 times larger. In this case, an order of magnitude higher would mean the volume of oil coming from the well could be 10 times higher than the 5,000 barrels a day coming out now. That would mean 50,000 barrels a day, or 2.1 million gallons a day. It appears the new leaks mentioned in the Wednesday release are the leaks reported to the public late Wednesday night.

"There is no official change in the volume released but the Coast Guard is preparing for a worst-case release," continues the document.

Arizona sheriff: 'We didn't need the law'

Immigration - a profoundly complex matter.

This Sheriff says he does not need it. The law as it stands works. Secondly he feels that this is a federal issue.

I wonder if the law in Arizona is like the shots fired on Fort Sumpter - one action that unleashes huge energy?

5 days a week I get my Daily Cartoon from Hugh - Gapingvoid - McLeod

He has become THE email I long for - funny, sad and evocative - talking about philosophers - I think that Hugh has become mine.

His message - live and be true to who you really are. Don't be a sheep. Watch our for your wanker side. Listen to your real self. Act!

He has become a primary source too for gifts. What do you give to people that you care about? I like the idea of sending them something that reinforces their life. There are many messages like this on his site and he has set up a very easy to use and clear site to buy from. 

I have met Hugh only once briefly at a reboot in Copenhagen and we don't know each other. I am a fan because he is a good and brave man who has won my deep respect.

 

Immigration now a really hot issue

Huffington Post ran an article of the reaction to the Arizona law - basically saying that there are moves afoot to  boycott the state by conventions.

What I found of more interest was the number of comments - over 15,000!

This suggests to me that immigration is going to be the burning issue this summer.

At KETC we plan to cover this issue in a new way - over the next year we plan an online coverage that will show the vast complexity of the topic - the norms in media are to use soundbites and a he said she said polarizing view.

We hope to showcase the full messiness of it. We launch a beta beta site this week that we hope over time will give voice to a wide spread of story covering all points of view.

While we do this online, we are working on a 4 part - 4 hour documentary that will go to air in early 2011.

Here is our stake in the ground.

The reality of our oil situation is that "New Oil" is located in very tough places - tough geology, tough conditions and tough politics. There is no "Easy" oil left to find.

We believe that "Technology" will save us. But as we have seen this month, we are at the limits of what we can do.

So what are we really faced with now?

Thomas More was a zealot who had as many people burned who read the bible in the vernacular as possible. Printers were the hackers of their day and many too were burnt.

It's ironic that we see the same forces today - those with an interest in their interest who mask their own interests with accusations that we steal!

The Church was all powerful back in the 15th century as corporate interests are today - but my bet is that they will lose today as they lost then.
