For the third election in a row, American voters have upended their nation’s political order. Their deep frustration with an unresponsive system has again led them to recast its central players.
The result is a Congress in which both ends of the political spectrum will be unusually well represented, complicating the delicate task of building consensus just when the country’s grim challenges require it most.
It seems impossible in an English Speaking democracy to have a working majority government these days. Canada is a now long standing minority, Australia has a razor thin majority and the UK a coalition.
Now America, that could not get what it wanted from a majority gets gridlock.
The American design now I think will make it impossible to get anything done. There is no good will on either side. Both will work I fear to show the people that nothing can be done unless one side is given a large lead.
The result will not be what either want I think.
Nothing productive will be accomplished. But millions will still have no chance of a job. The rich will get richer. The infrastructure will decay further, The states will move closer to bankruptcy. The middle and working classes will lose more.
The result will be that more and more people will give up on how the nation is governed. The ultra extremists will have a field day.
We are entering very dangerous times. What to do? What to do? Is this all inevitable? What to do?
